Description
Opening instructions can be found under the More Info tab. Closing instructions can be found under the Installation tabLeslie’s Combo Kits are the right product to get your pool properly winterized in freezing markets. We have combined the right products all in one box to make it easy for you to have everything in one place. Our Deluxe Kit treats up to 20,000 gallons but if your pool is smaller than this, take a look at our Standard Kit which treats up to 10,000 gallons. We also carry a kit specifically designed to treat an above ground pool up to 10,000 gallons.
Why should you close your pool?
In hard freeze areas the pool must be winterized to prevent freeze damage to the pool, its plumbing, and its equipment. Covering the pool when the water and plumbing have been winterized keeps debris and leaves out of the pool and makes spring start-up a snap. Failure to winterize the pool properly can result in staining and scaling and equipment damage, conditions which can be expensive to correct.

Opening Instructions:If your pool has a cover, follow steps 1-4 below. If no cover, skip to step 5.
- Remove water from pool cover using a submersible pump or a siphon and clean off any debris that has accumulated over the winter.
- Remove the pool cover.
- Clean the cover thoroughly using a vinyl safe cleaner.
- After cleaning and drying both sides of the cover, sprinkle Leslie’s Alkalinity Up or talcum powder on cover to help prevent mold and mildew. Fold the cover loosely and store it in a cool dry place.
- Raise the water level to its normal level or about in the middle of the skimmer opening.
- Reinstall pool equipment if it was removed. Reconnect the filter, pump, etc. Make sure all drain plugs are replaced in pump, filter, heater, booster pumps, pool cleaners, etc.
- If Anti-Freeze was used in winterizing, discharge this to waste or backwash.
- Remove winterizing plugs from the skimmer and the return lines.
- Prime the pump and then turn on the circulation and filtration system.
- Add 1 liter of Metal Free per 20,000 gallons, or 1/2 liter per 10,000 gallons. Sprinkle in water around pool perimeter. Do not add through skimmer.
- Test the water for pH and total alkalinity. The proper range for total alkalinity is from 80 to 120 ppm for a gunite (plaster) pool or 100 to 140 ppm for vinyl-liner, painted or fiberglass pools. Adjust total alkalinity to the proper range. The proper pH is from 7.4 to 7.6. After adjusting total alkalinity, adjust pH to the proper range. Brush the pool or vacuum thoroughly.
- Shock the pool with Leslie’s Fresh ‘N Clear® at the rate of 2 pounds per 10,000 gallons. Broadcast directly over pool. Fresh ‘N Clear® will help to oxidize any contaminants that collected during the winter and allows your sanitizer to be more effective.
- Broadcast 21 ounces of Chlor Brite per 10,000 gallons over the pool with pump running. Very dirty pools may require up to 2 pounds of Chlor Brite per 10,000 gallons. Run circulation system overnight.
- The next day, add 1 quart of Leslie’s Algae Control for pools up to 20,000 gallons or 1 pint for pools up to 10,000 gallons. Mix the Algae Control with water in a clean plastic pail and pour mixture into the pool. Allow water to circulate for 2 hours before continuing.
- Add 4 ounces of Leslie’s Ultra Bright Water Clarifier per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Mix thoroughly with water. Follow label directions. Run circulation system overnight.
- Shake bottle of Pool Magic + PHOSfree. Pour entire contents into skimmer with pump running. Run circulation continuously for 48 hours. Each week in season, use PHOSFree + Pool Perfect per label directions to enjoy Clear, Perfect Water all summer long!
- Bring a sample of your pool water to your local Leslie’s store (if there is one in your area) for a free water analysis to make sure that the phosphates, water hardness, iron, copper and conditioner levels in your pool water are in their safe and proper ranges.
PLEASE NOTE: If Your Pool Was Not Winterized For Freezing Conditions, Skip To Step 9.
Installation
WINTERIZING FOR NON-FREEZING CONDITIONS- One week prior to closing your pool, add 14 ounces of Pool Magic + PHOSfree per 10,000 gallons into skimmer with pump running. NOTE: shake bottle well before pouring. Run pump normally for 1 week to filter out phosphates. This dose will remove approximately 300 ppb phosphates. Your local Leslie’s store can test your water for phosphate content. After 1 week, proceed with step 2.
- Brush and vacuum the pool thoroughly to remove all dirt, leaves and debris.
- Add 1 liter of Metal Free per 20,000 gallons or 1/2 liter per 10,000 gallons. Sprinkle in water around pool perimeter. Do not add through skimmer.
- Bring the Total Alkalinity into the 100 – 120 ppm range for plaster pools and 120 – 140 ppm for vinyl liner, fiberglass and painted pools. Adjust the pH to 7.4 – 7.6. Bring the Calcium Hardness level into the 200 – 400 ppm range.
- Add 1 quart of Leslie’s Algae Control per 25,000 gallons or 1 pint per 12,500 gallons; mix with water and pour over pool surface with pump running. Wait 1 hour.
- Shock the pool with Leslie’s Fresh ‘N Clear® at the rate of 2 pounds per 10,000 gallons. Broadcast directly over pool.
- Bring the chlorine level to 1.5 ppm. DO NOT over-chlorinate the pool. 3 1⁄2 ozs. of Leslie’s Chlor Brite per 10,000 gallons will increase the chlorine level by 1.5 ppm.
- Install your pool cover. If using sandbags or water tubes, space them 12 inches apart. In areas where wind is a problem, place the bags end to end. This will prevent the cover from being pulled in.
- Set the timeclock to operate the filter system 2 – 4 hours a day.
- Check the water balance and chlorine level every 2 weeks.
- Once a month, inspect the pool by pulling back the corner of the cover. If the water has changed color, if stains are developing or scale is starting to form, test the water or bring a sample of water to your nearest Leslie’s store for advice.
- One week prior to closing your pool, add 14 ounces of Pool Magic + PHOSfree per 10,000 gallons into skimmer with pump running. NOTE: shake bottle well before pouring. Run pump normally for 1 week to filter out phosphates. This dose will remove approximately 300 ppb phosphates. Your local Leslie’s store can test your water for phosphate content. After 1 week, proceed with step 2.
- Brush and vacuum the pool to remove all dirt, leaves and debris.
- Add 1 liter of Metal Free per 20,000 gallons or 1/2 liter per 10,000 gallons. Sprinkle in water around pool perimeter. Do not add through skimmer.
- Bring the Total Alkalinity into the 100 – 120 ppm range for plaster pools and 120 – 140 ppm for vinyl liner, fiberglass, or painted pools.
Broadcast directly over pool with pump running.
- Bring the chlorine level to 1.5 ppm – 3.0 ppm. DO NOT over-chlorinate the pool. 3 1/2 oz. of Leslie’s Chlor Brite per 10,000 gallons will increase the chlorine level by 1.5 ppm.
- Let the pump run for at least 1 complete cycle (4-8 hours) after adding chemicals. Backwash and chemically clean the filter before closing the pool for the winter.
- Using a submersible pump, lower the water level below the skimmer and all return lines (normally about 18 inches below the tile line). This partial draining will allow all of the water to drain out of the equipment and plumbing lines.
- Remove the drain plugs from the pump strainer basket housing, the pump volute (if applicable), the filter tank and the heater. Drain the automatic pool cleaner’s booster pump and the automatic chlorinator, if so equipped. Be sure to turn off the main power supply and remove the “on” and “off” trippers from the time clock. Position the multiport valve handle (if applicable) between any 2 settings. This will ensure all ports are partially open to allow for freeze expansion.
- When the water has completely drained out of the plumbing lines, put winterizing plugs into the return line(s) and the skimmer line(s). It is recommended that new winterizing plugs be used each year. If the return fitting is removed, a threaded plug may be used.
- Add swimming pool line antifreeze to all lines at the rate of 1 gallon per 10 feet of pipe. Do NOT use automotive antifreeze, as this is toxic and may damage your pool/equipment. Place a Gizzmo (sold at Leslie’s stores) into the skimmer to take up any expansion due to freezing. The Gizzmo will also seal off the skimmer line and trap any air in the line.
- Refill the pool to 4 to 6 inches below the skimmer inlet in vinyl liner pools or 4 to 6 inches below the tile line in gunite (plaster) pools. This will prevent ice damage to the tile.
- Remove all articles such as ladders, hoses, over-the-top skimmers, etc. Remove the automatic pool cleaner and drain it completely. Lay the hoses out straight in a non-freezing location.
- Inflate air pillow(s). (Use an air pump or the exhaust from home vacuum cleaner). Generally, 2 or 3 pillows are sufficient for an average pool (16' x 32'). Air pillows on the pool surface help relieve the pressure of expanding ice and help support the cover. To keep the air pillow(s) in place in the center of the pool, tie the air pillow(s) to the rope anchors, the diving board base or any other stationary object. If more than 1 pillow is needed, tie them together.
- The pool is now ready to be covered.
- The chemical balance should be checked at least once a month and the pool visually inspected.
- Add 1 liter of Metal Free per 20,000 gallons or 1/2 liter per 10,000 gallons. Sprinkle in water around pool perimeter. Do not add through skimmer.
- Bring the Total Alkalinity into the 120 – 140 ppm range. Adjust the pH to 7.4 – 7.6 and the Calcium Hardness from 200 – 400 ppm.
Broadcast directly over pool with pump running.
- Bring the chlorine level to 1.5 ppm – 3.0 ppm. DO NOT over-chlorinate the pool. 3 1⁄2 oz. of Leslie’s Chlor Brite per 10,000 gallons will increase the chlorine level by 1.5 ppm.
- Let the pump run for at least 1 complete cycle (4-8 hours) after adding chemicals. Backwash and chemically clean the filter before closing the pool for the winter.
- Remove the inlet (directional or eyeball) fitting which is located on the inside pool wall, usually 6 to 12 inches below the water line. Insert a winterizing plug in this inlet.
- Using a submersible pump or a siphon, lower the water level in the pool 4 to 6 inches below the skimmer.
- Remove the drain plugs from the pump strainer basket housing, the pump volute (if applicable), and the filter tank. Disconnect the filter hoses from the skimmer fitting and from the pool return fitting. Drain the automatic chlorinator, (if applicable). Equipment may be moved or stored in a non-freezing place, such as a basement.
- Remove all articles such as ladders, hoses, over-the-top skimmers, etc. Remove the automatic pool cleaner and drain it completely. Lay the hoses out straight in a non-freezing location.
- Inflate air pillow(s). Use an air pump or the exhaust from a home vacuum cleaner. Generally, 2 pillows are sufficient for a 24-foot round pool. Air pillows on the pool surface help relieve the pressure of expanding ice and help support the cover. To keep the air pillow(s) in place in the center of the pool, tie the air pillow(s) to a stake or any other stationary object. If more than 1 pillow is needed, tie them together.
- The pool is now ready to be covered.
- The chemical balance should be checked at least once a month and the pool visually inspected. Back to Top
