Two-speed pumps can allow a pool to operate more efficiently by moving water at two different rates. The pump may be run on a slow speed for a lo0nger period of time, moving the same volume of water with a lower total dynamic head (TDH).

A two-speed pump will typically be set at a low speed for regular filtration. To turn over approximately the same amount of water, a pump running at a low speed of 1,750 rpm would need to operate twice as long as a pump running on regular speed of 3,500 rpm; however, because of the laws of fluid dynamics, less total energy should be used by a pump running at half speed even if it runs twice as long.

The high speed setting can be used when additional water movement is needed, such as after a storm, when the pool has a heavy bather load, or during cleaning and back washing.

Because less total energy is used to turn over the same amount of water when a pump is running at low speed, the customer could realize a significant energy savings by installing and correctly using a two-speed pump.

The California Code of Regulations, Title 20, regulates the efficiency of certain appliances, including swimming pool pumps. According to Title 20, all new residential pool pumps 1.0 total horsepower (THP) or greater must have two or more speeds. This law is intended to reduce the amount of energy consumed in California, because swimming pool pumps are the second-largest source of residential energy use in the state. Back to Top
