Safety Pool Covers

Swimming pool safety covers are a great way to ensure your inground swimming pool water stays safe & clear throughout the winter months and ready for next season. Leslie's safety swimming pool covers are constructed with reinforced, tightly woven fabric that secures safely to your pool deck.

Leslie’s offers a variety of pool safety covers – mesh, solid, or a solid cover with a mesh panel. Both materials have their own distinct pros and cons. We have provided a pros and cons list below to help you determine which safety cover best suits you and your pool’s needs.

Mesh Safety Pool Cover
  • Advantages: Mesh safety covers keep all debris (except fine particles) from entering the pool – the debris that does not pass through can easily be blown away. Mesh safety covers are also less expensive than solid covers and are easier to install/remove due to its lightweight material. They also allow rain water and melting snow to pass through the mesh – this prevents the cover from being weighed down by standing water and replenishing the water lost from evaporation. Since there is no standing water on top of the cover, mesh safety covers do not require a cover pump.
  • Disadvantages: Mesh safety covers allow fine dust particles to enter the pool, so vacuuming is required when removing the cover during pool opening in the spring. Sunlight can also enter the pool which can help harbor the growth of bacteria and algae.
Solid Safety Pool Cover
  • Advantages: Solid safety covers prevent all water, snow, and debris from entering your pool – even fine dust particles. This ultimately provides a complete solid barrier between your pool and the environment. Solid covers also keep any sunlight out, preventing any bacteria or algae from growing during the winter. Water and chemicals also do not evaporate from your pool, meaning less work and fewer chemicals used during pool opening in the spring. Some solid covers contain mesh drain panels, allowing standing water to drain from the cover.
  • Disadvantages: Cover pumps are required for solid covers without mesh drain panels. Cover pumps remove standing water from your pool cover and prevent accidents that can result from slippery or icy covers. Adding on, solid covers are heavier and require a bit more work to install and remove.

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a pool safety cover and a winter cover?
A: Pool safety covers are usually more expensive but they offer safety features that winter pool covers do not. Safety covers are used for inground pools but can be used for above ground pools with a surrounding deck; on the other hand, winter covers can be used for both above ground and inground pools. For more information, our Winter Pool Covers vs. Safety Pool Covers blog details the key differences between these two swimming pool covers.

Q: How do I measure my pool size for a custom safety pool cover?
A: For unique pools and features, the A-B triangulation measuring method is often used. We recommend using chalk or painter's tape when marking points on the pool. It’s best that you provide a sketch of the pool with the A-B lines, cross-dimensions, and notes concerning special features or obstructions. It’s important that the measurements are clockwise (from left to right) to avoid your safety cover from arriving as a mirror image of your pool. For more information, our How to Measure Your Pool for a Safety Cover blog provides an example of how your sketch should look like.
