Tapered Closed Cell Virgin Foam & 20-Guage Steel Channels

Hot Tub Works uses virgin foam for all of our hot tub covers. The 4-inch to 2-inch tapered spa cover features closed cell virgin foam core insulation in a variety of densities to meet every specific need. Our tapers are the best when it comes to cover strength and heat retention all while keeping the cover weight as minimal as possible. For added reinforcement, a 20-gauge steel center channel is inserted into both pieces of foam insulation to strengthen the cover’s center and provide extra strong support.

Sturdy, Four Layer Hinge

The hinges on spa covers are critical stress points which is we make these areas sturdier by using four layers of reinforced vinyl. The design and function of our hinge has been tested through thousands of folds to ensure reliable use for years of opening and closing of your spa cover.

Tips on Measuring for Your Cover

Use your current cover for the most accurate measurement or measure from the outside of your hot tub
Measure rounded corners using a carpenter's square or use a measuring tape to measure from were the curve starts to where the corner of the current cover or hot tub is
For the skirt, measure from the top of the hot tub to the bottom of the colored plastic or acrylic
For safety straps, measure from the bottom of the current cover (or top of the skirt) to the bottom of the safety straps (not including the plastic clips)

2-Inch Tapered Foam

Like the roof of a house, your cover needs to be able to disperse water to prevent damage from puddles and debris. To ensure this all of our covers have a 2-inch taper, meaning that the center of the cover is 2 inches thicker than the edges of the cover for all models! This encourage water to roll off the cover instead of puddling and compromising the cover from weight and dirt. We want to make sure your cover the maximum defense against the elements so that you can enjoy your cover as long as possible!

R-Value, You Should Definitely Care!

R-Value is the resistance your cover insulation has to heat flow. Simply put, the higher the R-Value, the less heat or cold your cover insulation allows to escape or pass through it. Why do you care? Glad you asked! The less heat that is allowed to escape through your cover between dips, the less energy you have to use to keep it warm for when you're ready to relax. As we all know, energy costs money so having the right R-Value for your hot tub cover could save you quite a bit! If you live in a colder climate, we recommend one of our models with a higher R-Value to help save you money keeping your spa or hot tub warm. On the other hand, if your spa is kept indoors you may not need as high of an R-Value.

Something to Keep in Mind

While you're shopping for your spa or hot tub cover, it's important to know that R-Value will decrease when chemicals or moisture are introduced to the insulation. This is why our covers have high density rigid cellular polystyrene thermal insulation, are vacuum wrapped in continuous sheets of 6 mil heat welded polyethylene, and are sealed in heavy gauge marine grade vinyl with chemical resistant scrim and stitching.

Insulation Foam Density

Foam density measures the amount of space between each cell of foam. It's measured by the weight of the foam per cubic foot, so a foam with 1.0lb density means the cover weighs 1.0lb per cubic foot of foam. The higher the density, the closer the foam cells are and the more durable and insulated the foam becomes.

Why Your Cover's Foam Density Matters

When choosing a foam density, you should consider the insulation and durability needs of your cover. Foam density directly impacts the cost of keeping your hot tub warm and ready to enjoy. Because there is less space between the foam cells in higher-density foam, there is less chance for heat to escape through your cover. Because of this, hot tub owners in colder climates usually benefit from lower energy costs with 2.0lb foam density. 1.5lb density is appropriate for most mild climates, while 1.0lb foam density should only be used with indoor spas and hot tubs.

Foam density also impacts the durability of your cover, specifically the amount of weight it can withstand. Higher-density foam has the ability to sustain more weight than lower-density foam. If you live in an area where snow may settle onto your cover or you know you won't be able to keep your pets or children from climbing on top of it, you may want to consider a higher-density foam solely for the durability and longevity it will provide for your cover. This popular option for colder climates fills the void along the seam, which helps cut heating costs and will pay for itself in energy savings. As an added benefit, the seal provides structural support where it is most important, at the center, which prevents sagging, and extends the life of your cover.
